advancING a Green New Deal

GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR A GREEN NEW DEAL

We are an alliance of 27 lawmakers from 22 nations across the globe, supported by many more who have signed the ‘Declaration for a Green New Deal’.

As lawmakers we pledge to do everything we can to advance a transformative Green New Deal, where we are and globally.

There are growing movements for Green New Deals around the world: from active campaigns for a Green New Deal from Bangladesh to Australia, to the Pacto Verde and more. There is a Green New Deal in South Korea, while in the United States President Biden has proposed an ambitious plan for jobs. Politicians in the UK, Canada and beyond have tabled bills for ambitious Green New Deals. None of these have yet resulted in a transformative package of policies that are simultaneously socially just and ecologically sufficient, despite significant advances. We will work to change that.

As the alliance gets underway, we will establish an advisory group drawn from members of civil society working for a Green New Deal around the world.

 What we want:

A Green New Deal that can transform our societies and economies so that they are greener and fairer must be at the heart of the Covid recovery, locally and globally

We want to learn from the best and the worst of the way that the world responded to Covid19. At our best we came together as communities to support one another, while governments marshalled resources at an unprecedented scale against an existential threat. At our worst, the poorest were abandoned, large corporations profited and ability to access the vaccine was determined by ability to pay. We can do better.

We don’t have to wait for international agreements on the climate and nature crises. Change can happen now.

A GREEner fairer world

WHAT IS THE GREEN NEW DEAL?

The scale, ambition and spirit of the Green New Deal promises the creation of a greener, fairer world where all people and the planet can flourish.

It is an interlinked package of policy measures that recognises that significant investment in transforming the way we travel, grow the food we eat, warm our homes and power our lives can also create abundant good quality employment, reversing corrosive inequality and creating a world where everyone can flourish.

The Green New Deal means directing resources where they are needed most, to the communities on the front line, rebalancing society so that it is fairer and greener.

It means reparations are due from the global north which has profited from the extraction of fossil fuels and resources, to the global south. It is designed to advance a greener, fairer world.
